VISA x Tyler, The Creator

VISA x Tyler, The Creator 〰️

I wanted to write a spec that went beyond surface-level celebrity endorsement to something that used a cultural figure to tell a story with real stakes and meaning.

MY TASK: Create a campaign for VISA that addresses a hard truth: despite increased corporate efforts in recent years, a dollar still circulates for only 6 hours in the Black community compared to 17 days in white communities, 20 days in Jewish communities, and 30 days in Asian communities. I wanted to visualize what closing that gap could look like.

ACTION: I chose Tyler, the Creator because he brings a unique voice to conversations about ownership, creativity, and Black community wealth. He has also built his own label, his own brand, on his own terms. The concept, "Follow the Money," tells the story from the point of view of a single $20 bill as it journeys through a Black community. Starting at a local farmer's market, the bill passes from a kiosk owner to his niece, who opens a bank account with it. Ten years later, that same niece secures a loan from the same banker and opens her own yoga studio, where a customer pays with a VISA card. I wrote Tyler as the narrator and envisioned director Ramell Ross whose film Nickel Boys showcases his signature "sentient camera" technique, to make the ad a living, breathing portrait of community and resilience. My screenwriting background shaped the character work: each person the bill touches has a specific arc, even in seconds of screen time.

RESULT: DeChazier Pykel, Executive Creative Director at Contender Labs, reviewed the script and loved how ready it was to go straight into production. The spec demonstrates my ability to pair brand strategy with cultural insight and cinematic storytelling. It also shows how I write scripts that don't need translation for the production team
